This is very forthcoming of you and I respect you being able to admit this...
I can't say that it was a family thing for me, there was never hate....because my parents never EVER acted like a racist. We just lived in a very very small town, a very uncultured town so it was a big shock to everyone....when I started dating a black guy.
My daughter is now a teenager and the most beautiful person; on the inside as well as the outside.

"Racist" is such a strong word and IMO it gets used way too much and for the wrong reasons. A true racist HATES people of other cultures, skin color, etc. I think there are very few actual racists, though yes they still do exist in society. I mean really, how can someone look at another human being and think of them as nothing more than an insect that you can squash with no remorse? It's sick.
However, prejudiced folks would be far more widespread, everyone has probably at some time had prejudices, stereotypes or bias towards other cultures and ethnicities. While it's not acceptable to have prejudices, I think it's much less serious than having racist traits, and folks can be educated to dispell their prejudices.
I think our society today is dealing more with racial prejudices than actual racism. I could be wrong and maybe some would say that's just splitting hairs but that's just what I think.

I have had a moment. I once had a job that I loved and was great at - won all kinds of awards for my work. Then my boss retired and a black man was promoted (beyond his abilities, I might add). He removed me from my position in favor of a black female. He then added a black male and a Mexican female. But while I was doing my new job, I had to train all these other people to do my old one. I finally quit. Soon there were six people doing terrible at a job I excelled at - alone. For about a year, I hated all black people. Then the veil lifted and I realized that it wasn't all black people - just one. And I hate that one, not because he is black, but because he is a jerk. And I hope he dies screaming. So there.

Racist no.. intolerant yes. you have to understand how it is in Canada, you dont see it on TV but there is ALOT of racism and intolerance of First Nations people. When I was younger I was exposed to alot of comments and it did affect my view until I grew up and learned different. My family was no worse for it than every other Canadian in every town I have lived, jealous of the fact that they dont have to pay taxes etc.. I grew up and realized that WE stole from them we took what was theirs.. they deserve more than what they get now. However before I learned this I was slightly intolerant and prejudice towards First Nations people If anything now I am more prejudice of my own kind.. lol
(I grew up near where an unarmed Dudley George was shot by police for protesting. What a trajedy, caused by the attitude and comments I still hear from so many Canadians)

Sort of. My parents are quite racist (they moved here from Ireland) and I just believed what they said. But I started dating a half Black and half Spanish guy (when I was 16) and he turned me around. I saw the other side of things. Now it annoys everyone how I am an advocate for people of other ethnicities. And I'm so glad I was shown the light.

i personally have never been racist...but some of my students (who are all immigrants from all over the world) make comments about certain races behaving more badly than others in class, in the hallways, and on the bus after school. It seems as if they are developing racism, so as I remind them...it's good to remember that there are good and bad people in every race and culture, so we shouldn't think of any one race as being bad because of a handful of people behaving badly.

I used to have a thing against Indians. I never understood. Know some of my best friends are Indian, and I have an even more respect for them after being in India and seeing what it is like there.

Nope. I live in a town of mostly whites, but I have no reason to hate people of other colors. I have heard people say things like "I dont have blacks, I hate N*****" or "I dont hate mexicans, I hate Sp**ks"
I cant stand it when people say stuff like that! There are good and bad people in every color, so why define it by race? Why not just say "I had bad/stupid people"?!
