Of course, all the greatest artists sat befoer the masters and copied. It's a tried and true practice. If you changethings then it moves from the realm of "practice"more to the realm of creative composition...

Yes, you're still an artist.

If you become a Christian or already are one, you cut your artistic legitimacy by 60%.

Yes you are. When i was younger i use do miniature water color copys of famous works of art for my dad to hang in his barbershop. This not only helped me understand the importance of composition but also taught me how to mix colors. It was this early practice and studying of art that eventually lead me to develope a sense of confidence and my own style of painting. I am a self taught artist who now does work on commission. You will know when it is time to move away from copying and compose your own works. Yes, you are still an artist and you will eventually prove that you are also original. My work can be seen at hellosanantonio.com under the artist name ''Guerro''.

A real artist gets ideas from everything..when copying you are learning and are free to invent. Use precedent art. Is stupid to think that an artist can create something out of nothing..you need to explore, study ,observe, inspiration comes when is seeken

Hopefully its a learning phase and you'll grow out of it. Emulation is one thing, but copying is another, find your own style.

If you're an artist, nothing your brother can say will change who you think you are. Tell him to take a leap.
