It's really pretty easy. To make it cheap look for deals on diapers and roll the diapers loosley. Also sticking in lots of inexpensive but useful baby items in the cake helps take up room. For decoration all you really need is some matching ribbon to wrap around it and to make a cake topper perhaps with a stuffed animal. There fun to make good luck.

I do this for a living....I run a diaper cake business. So I am sharing my secrets (shhhh....don't tell anyone!!) This is my recipe for the "Blankets as Icing" cake:

First off....diapers. Buy good ones that the parents will actually use (Huggies, Pampers). For a three-tier cake you will want to buy the 56 Package of Huggies Size 1 Diapers (I think Swaddlers will be around 48 diapers)

Buy a package of receiving blankets (once again get some good ones that are 30 x 40 they are PERFECT for swaddling. WalMart has Child of Mine blankets that are EXCELLENT quality and Target has the Amy Coe blankets that are also REALLY nice!!)

Get 2 packages of diaper pins (Gerber makes them...4 to a pack about $1.00 for each pack)

Now you want to buy the goodies to decorate with. Here are some ideas:
pacifiers, stuffed animal topper, wrist rattles, feeding spoons, washcloths, bath products, Lullabye CD, Colorful Links, Onesies, Infant Tylenol, Gas Drops, Teething Gel, Teething Beads, Rattles.

TO MAKE THE CAKE:
Without unfolding them, roll the diapers and secure them with a rubber band. Roll them so the fold is on the outside!

For the bottom tier you will want to stand the diapers on end and form concentric circles. The bottom tier should be four or five circles worth (about half of the total diapers). Secure the final circle with ribbon (doesn't matter what it looks like). Now take one of your receiving blankets and fold it so it is just the height of the diapers. Wrap that tightly around the tier and secure it with two safety pins. Now you will want to remove each diaper, individually, and take the rubber band off. If there is any wiggle room in this tier you will want to roll a diaper and stuff it into the tier where it will fit. You want the tiers to be tight and compact!!Your first tier is complete!!

Repeat this process for the 2nd and 3rd tier. You will be using less diapers because you want these tiers to be smaller. You still want them to be tight but if you start running out of diapers it is MORE IMPORTANT for the bottom tier to be tightly packed with diapers than the other tiers!!

---------

So now you have your base cake. 3-Tiers with blankets. Stack your tiers and begin decorating. The links can be used to attach pacifiers and to brighten up the cake!! Booties can be attached with the two remaining safety pins to the front of the cake. Bath Products can be placed around the bottom of the cake and secured with ribbon that matches the overall look of the cake. Washcloths can be rolled up nicely and tucked into the upper tiers behind the blankets....sticking out a little. Rattle toys can also be peeking out of the diapers.

Get a pizza pan to place the cake on.....if you made your cake solidly you shouldn't have to worry about the cake falling apart on the drive to the shower! (Just don't drive like a maniac, I suppose!!) You also don't need to worry about attaching the tiers together or to the base because the idea is for everything to be usable and easily taken apart. I NEVER attach my cakes to the platters or use cardboard cake boards and they ALWAYS stay together (even when being shipped to the other side of the country and the UPS drivers probably tossing my boxes to and fro!!).

Take a look at my site....on the "Blankets as Icing" gallery page. You will get a good idea of all the ways you can decorate your cake.

Making the cake is the tricky part....decorating is the FUN part!!

Good luck and let me know if I can assist you at all.....HAVE FUN!!

Check for diaper coupons on the internet. Coupons are always a good thing, You dont have to make a huge cake either, it can be a small one. I also whenever I make them stick in some inexpensive toys, bibs, burp cloths, baby spoons, pacifiers, etc. into the cake for decoration, and use ribbon (any color) to add a little color, depending on the diaper they might just be white. Rolling and rubber banding is the easiest way that I have found to construct. You can be really creative with one, check for coupons though, you can get enough to make a small cake for less than $10.

How To Make A Cloth Diaper Cake
What Makes Cloth Diaper Cakes So Cool?

* They make GREAT baby shower gifts!
* It's a good way to introduce cloth diapers to a new mom
* They make beautiful baby shower centerpieces

This is truly a "basic cake", and not even made with brand-new diapers! I will put up a photo of a more "finished" cake when I get the materials needed. This photo is up to give you an idea of what a diaper cake can look like.

Ingredients:

* 1 doz prefolds, folded in 3rds, lengthwise
* 7 pairs infant socks
* 16-20 diaper pins
* ribbon
* 1 recieving blanket
* optional: goodies to fold into the cake

Instructions:

* Fold the prefolds into 3rds lengthwise
* Roll up the recieving blanket. It will become the center of the cake. Measure to make sure it's long enough for the prefolds to wrap around it, but not so long that it will stick out the top of the cake. See pic above to see how I got the length just right.
* Roll the prefolds around the recieving blanket to make the cake, pinning to secure the diapers in place as needed. For this cake, I used 7 prefolds for the base, 4 prefolds for the middle layer, and 1 prefold for the top.
* ***Here's a fun tip!*** Roll goodies up in cake as you go: diaper covers, bibs, natural toys, cloth wipes, cloth nursing pads... whatever you think the recipient might like!
* Use ribbon to further secure the diapers in place and "dress up" the cake a little.
* Take each sock and tie a ribbon near the toe. Place these in the cake to act as "candles" or, if you prefer, flowers.
* Voila! You have a Cloth Diaper Cake!

This is a fun project to experiment with. Add your own touches for a truly unique gift! Here are some alternate ideas I came up with:

* Add lace around the edges for a "ruffled" look
* Put a toy or stuffed animal on top, or use fresh flowers as a topper
* Do everything in unbleached organic cotton and tie with raffia instead of ribbon
* Make a "mini cake" out of cloth wipes or wash cloths to go with the big one
