diagnosed with Breast Cancer and Emphsemia. She is 75 years old and was employed up until 8 months ago when she was layed off. She is on oxygen now and it is hard for her to get around. She receives about $963.00 in Social Security. Her rent is $400.00 a month, not counting electricity which usually at least $200.00 per month and a few other bills. ( water , phone etc.) Is there any possibility she would qualify for any type of disability income to help her with her rent? My husband and I help her pay for her meds along with her medicare. We do whatever we can. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

She may qualify for SSI through the Social Security Administration. http://www.ssa.gov/d&s1.htm

There is a program called Section 8 that she would qualify for, but I am not sure how to do this in your state. Here is the HUD site: http://www.hud.gov/progdesc/certifi8.cfm

Also check with your local public housing department. While there, perhaps she could also qualify for disabled/elderly housing which would cost her around 1/3 of her income and would include heat and utilities. Her rent is too high for her income right now. There are some very nice complexes that would also provide services like communal meals, social activities, and travel trips.

As she is over 65, she can't get disability benefits. At 65 and older, all benefits are based on age alone.

As for SSI benefits, it depends on the state she lives in. Her income is too high for SSI payments. However, some states chose to supplement the Federal SSI benefit, and thus allow a larger amount of income. Call your local Social Security office.

Does she have Medicare Part D to help pay for her prescriptions? Since she only has her monthly Social Security check now she may be eligible for extra help to help pay the premiums on that coverage. If so, that will give her a little extra money in her monthly check. Contact Social Security and ask about "extra help" with prescription drug coverage. They'll know what you mean.

Get a list of her medications and look up the manufacturers website. Nearly all have a program to help senior citizens with their medications.

Check with your local Section 8 office to see if she qualifies for rental assistance. Look in the Government pages of your local phone book.

She may also be able to get help with her electric bill. Contact your local utility company for more information. Most states have programs to help low income people with utility costs. They will tell you where to apply.

Good luck to you.

It would be imperative to keep living a such under those conditions financially without help from the Government.

There are several programs for the elderly including Senior Citizens apartments based on income, section 8 and Housing assistance.
You can chekc with your local Housing Urban Develoment in your area for these programs available for her based on her health, welafre and financial position.

This way she may only pay like 20% on income for rent. This will give her more money for her needs.

After the age of 72 I'm pretty sure disability is not an option. Look into signing her up for a program called SSI. It stands for Supplemental Security Income and is designed to help people who's reg. benefits leave them below the poverty line.

She gets to much social security to receive SSI. She should contact er local public assistance office and apply for assistance. She may qualify for extra help in paying for Medicare Part D if she is low income and has little in savings or investments, call Social Security to apply for that if she does not already receive it.

maybe theirs a cancer group center who can help you out in her hometown. or maybe she can move into a low income apt and get the disability apt which is somewhat lower than the rest.maybe her elec. company has discounts for the elderly or try the s.s disablities dept. they will help out if she is permant ill.but not if it is cureable.. whatever the case being she needs faith, and her family now more than ever just love her and be with her moms dont last forever enjoy her while she is still with you....& god bless you all

Check into the SSI because she may not get any money because of her SS income but the medicade would help with some of her medical and medicines but welfare office can help tell you what programs she may qualify for. good luck
