I'm filling out my course selection sheet, and just wanted to check out what it's like elsewhere. Is it wise to try for 3+ AP classes?

well at my high school A.P. is great if your only doing one or two classes.... but if your doing 3 or more i would recommened I.B. because its a national program and colleges will see that you did I.B. diploma rather than just one or two advanced placement classes

Here in Tn. most of the time the councilors will limit the students to 3 AP classes a semester but if you have a child like mine the school system will do an IEP and then they're allowed more. My oldest was doing high school course work in the forth and fifth grade and now that he's a junior most of his classes are collage level. With the Individual Education Plan he's getting to take college courses that give him credit towards a degree while the school system pays the fees.

By the way, my sons guidance councilor told me this was a No Child Left Behind program. She said she received a "newsletter" from the federal office that estimated only 3% of the gifted students in this country are taking advantage of this opportunity because the local and state school systems aren't taking advantage of all the resources available. Our local school board actually hired a resource facilitator to make sure our students were getting every available service.

Well being a senior and all, AP classes are like a cakewalk. No, just kidding. Well, it depends on what AP classes you intend to take.

I didn't take AP classes until my sophmore year in high school. I took AP Bio first.

Stuff like Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Art History, and US history, I'd say pay attention to, because they require a lot of work and TIME. you have to ask yourself if you really are committed to the workload because believe me, it'll be ALOT. I know some student's who are taking 5 AP courses and they seem to be doing fine, only because they're GOOD organizers. But everyone's different. Some people didn't even last two AP courses. But I'd say try one and if you can take it, try two the next year. etc etc.

The important thing is learning and passing, not how many AP courses you took in a year. I mean, how sad would it be if you took 5 ap courses and didn't pass any?

Besides, most colleges really don't care if you pass, they'll just count your AP course as elective credits. But that's another story.

i would say 3 at most, my high school does not limit it, but really my school offers a lot of ap courses and i would be hard pressed to find more than 3 per year, i would be taking courses in stuff i dont particularly care about

It really depends on your school for how many you can take. Don't take more than 3 unless you want to kill yourself. I have a relative who took 3 and she was just dying! (It also depends when you take them) This made her hate school even though she is somewhat of a genius.
