SUPERSTITION-don't change anything when you are winning. It started with the 1980's Isles.
Also, it has spread to other sports players-Roethlisberger for one.

The reason why players grow beards in the playoffs is because it is a superstitious thing to shave during the playoffs. If your team is still alive in the playoffs, you don't shave because, if you do, it apparently is bad luck and your team could lose. It's a superstition that every team at every competitive level of hockey takes up for good luck in the playoffs. Thats all it is.

It is a superstition in hockey. When the Islanders were good, the players grew beards as a sign of team unity. They decided to keep them during the playoffs. A few other teams copied this, and it became a league-wide thing.

because they either believe that letting their beards grow during playoffs brings good luck, or that shaving them off during play offs brings bad luck. either way ot comes down to the same thing: luck. and most hockey players, at least at that level, are very superstitous!

It's just a cool team thing to do. Everyone knows that theres nothing cooler than a good playoff beard! Die hard fans should even grow playoff beards until their team is eliminated.

Because they can.

Seriously, it supposedly signifies a sort of "team unity". It is sort of a weird tradition, but one that I truly enjoy. Another reason why the NHL is full of such interesting individuals.
