Honestly, I wouldn't mess around with it. If your baby is not ready to arrive then there's a reason for that. I know it sucks, believe me, my son was born 6 days overdue and I could hardly stand up at that point! But he came out healthy as anything and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
A few days before my due date, my OB/GYN told me that if I went a week overdue she would pencil me in for a hospital induction by giving me Pitocin. My son was born the day before the scheduled induction. It depends on where you live, but generally doctors don't like to let you go much longer than 1 week overdue.. at least in my area. Two weeks is the longest that anyone should ever make you wait though.. it can be dangerous to wait any longer. You can ask your doctor what their procedure is.
And as for how dilated you are.. honey, it doesn't mean a thing! I was walking around 3 cm dilated for 2 freakin' weeks! Some women have been known to be 1cm one day and in labor the next. Unfortunately, it's really out of your hands.
Hang in there sweetie.. your baby is going to take as long as he/she needs and it will be well worth the wait, I promise you! Congratulations and good luck!

You can take Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) (orally and inserted vaginally before bedtime) to help soften your cervix which can in turn make dilating easier. There is an herbal formula called 5-W by Nature's sunshine that you can start taking that has herbs that will help tone the uterus and make contractions more effective, therefore (theoretically!) shorten your labor. I took it for only one pregnancy and that happened to be my shortest, easiest labor. Could be coincidence, but I honestly feel it really helped me. It's not cheap, but, IMO, it's worth it. Keep active, make sure baby is lined up well and keep hydrated. Red Raspberry Leaf tea is a wonderful thing to drink. Don't worry about going over your due date. You're not truly overdue until you've completed 42w. That 40w mark is just an average and should not be thought of as set in stone. Baby may or may not be ready by then. Relax and enjoy while you can.

I was in a similar position. had labour for 3 days. I wasn't dialating. My obstetrician suggested that I go home and drink raspberry tea. It helps induce labour in a safe way. He also suggested that I have sex........hmmmm. I tried that, very uncomfortable however between that and the tea I dialated very quickly. You are a little to soon to be having labour. 38 weeks is considered a minimum full term, however if you are ready then you are ready. I wouldn't try to hard to push it, baby will come when it is ready. YES baby could come now at anytime. especialy if you are dialated!!!! Best of luck and congradulations!!!!!!!!!!

question: Did your well being practitioner say it replaced into alright to be having intercourse once you had preterm exertions at 31 weeks and dilated to 4cm? generally the common could be which you're placed on pelvic relax till you're finished-term, it rather is 37 weeks, no longer 36. it fairly is exceedingly favourite to have episodes of flurries of contractions in later being pregnant (in the previous in case you have had preterm exertions subject concerns). you may desire to be taking the hint and mendacity right down to chill out on your left side and enhance your hydration by skill of ingesting a pair vast glasses of water. in the event that they arrive greater desirable than 6 circumstances according to hour for greater desirable than a million hour after resting, then call your well being practitioner first in the previous heading to the scientific institution. enable them to go with no remember in case you may desire to be evaluated or no longer.

Evening primrose oil can be used to help soften and ripen the cervix. Red Raspberry leaf can help tone the uterus and prepare it for labor.
