Well as of Nokia they categorise there phones and do the naming..
Like a series of phones with almost the similar technology gets a set of names..
Like N-90, N-93 and so on...
The last two numbers used by nokia is just a number sequence showing which one's the older or newer one in the series..
Other companies like Motorola let the Marketing Domain Pick up a catchy name that would suit there product.
Its mere creativity there i say.

They are not weird really. The words just needs a little more understanding and everything clicks in place.

Nokia has sold many things over a long period of time from paper products to bicyles, computers , cables, etc. before it came to what it is today. It got it's name from Nokia Rapids, a place, where the name became established.

Nokia is a small town on the banks of Nokianvirta In western Finland. The word Nokia originates from Old Finnish meaning sable which was a term used for any dark coated animal. The Nokia Coat of Arms was enclosed in sable.

Numbers are given to Nokia probably just for easy cataloging.

Motorola:

Regarding Motorola, It was Paul V. Galvin who created the name. He created this name for a new motorcar radio , thus the origin of 'Motor' in Motorola and he added the 'ola' - this could be ' ola' as an expression which if we do further reseach means also "okay" which means 'everything is fine'.
