One of my girl friends lost her mother to cancer. Her mother was a great courageous woman. What do you think is the best thing to say to her right now? There has to be something other than "I'm sorry for your loss" and "Deepest condolences to you and your family"...

When my husband's mom died suddenly of a stroke last year, the things that stuck with us the most were when people who had known her came up and shared memories of her, or told us how she had been an inspiration to their lives. That let us know that she had really touched the lives of others and that they really remembered her, not just were dropping the trite "I'm sorry for your loss" . If you knew the friend's mom, try to think of something uplifting that you can say in the way of remembrance about her. The most important thing is to let your friend know you are there for her, and encourage her to talk about her mom. She needs someone who will listen, and not be uncomfortable if she needs to talk.

The best way to deal with a friend's loss is to be there for her. Let her vent her anger or sorry on you. It's very hard but if you love your friend you can do it for her.

" if there is anything I can do, please let me know" OR " I remember when your mom... followed by something nice she did or something funny.
