I just began working as a journalist at a small town newspaper with alot of scandal going on at the moment. The guy I am replacing is going into semi-retirement, and has been lambasted for articles written saying "bad things" about the county's fiscal practices. I'm curious as to the experiences of other journalists and if I have serious cause for concern for safety, etc. I am a mother, and the thought of getting involved in any kind of scandal, even if just catching the wrath of those doing wrong, scares me. Any advice?

Don't worry about your safety. It's been a really, really long time since a journalist was killed in this country for a story.

The wife and I are both Journo's in a major city. She reports crime and I was on an I-Team for years. While I got myself into sticky situations, never did I worry about my safety. She writes about scum on a regular basis and has never had any problems.

If your beat is to uncover the "bad things" about a county's fiscal practices, do it. At some point in your career, you're going to be covering scandal. There's nothing you can do about other than, ask the previous poster said, resign yourself to the garden section.

My father was a journalist.

What you are supposed to be doing is reporting the facts, not editorializing or putting your own spin on events. Sounds like the other guy was adding his opinions to his articles, which got him into trouble.

If you follow the ethics of reporting, and always have at least two reliable sources to back up anything you write, then if people criticize you at least you'll have done your job properly.

Document everything and expose it after contacting an authority so you can be sure that you will be protected. Speak the truth, and don't name names unless you're 100% certain. The last thing you need is a suit.

Make a choice: write fluff, and be safe. You can smile in the supermarket, attend paper-sponsored coffees, and eventually be the grande dame of the garden column.

Or, write what needs to be told. You may get spit on (read 'To Kill A Mockingbird'), you may get threats, you may get a Pulitzer.

Your choice.
