The most important thing you can do to keep the cost of a room down is to avoid special events, large conventions and weekends.

These are some "generally" inexpensive hotels
Arizona Charlie's Boulder
Stratosphere
http://www.stratospherehotel.com >web site for AC & the Strat>will price match any online rate you find for their hotel

Orleans
Gold Coast
Barbary Coast
http://www.orleanscasino.com >will price match >BC has been sold to Harrah's but is still listed on the Coast web site

Later: the trasfer of Barbary coast is now complete & the new name is Bill's Gambling Hall & Saloon.

reservations> 1-866-BILLS-45

Palace Station
Boulder Station

Downtown hotels
Main Street Station - California - Fremont
http://www.mainstreetcasino.com

El Cortez
Fitzgerald's
Four Queens
Vegas Club
Plaza
Horseshoe

On the Boulder Hwy.
Sam's Town >free shuttle bus to the strip & downtown

My favorite sites to check LV room rates
http://www.travelworm.com
http://www.i4vegas.com

Great site for up to date LV info, and links to all hotel web sites
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com >list of all free hotel shuttles, buffets, shows, nightclubs, free spectacles, etc.

I use the CAT/Deuce busses, to get around. $5(max) for a 24 hour pass...

These are hotels you want to avoid
Gold Spike
Western
Wild Wild West
Circus Circus>unless you're younger than 12, you're not going to enjoy a stay here.

not as bad as the above hotels, but these are not worth the money.
Imperial Palace
Casino Royale

Later: "deni" >Can I steal that line? LOL

There are two, 4 star hotels in LV that "sometimes" have rates as low as $49 and fairly frequently will have $69 rates>Sunday through Thursday< The Luxor and Golden Nugget. If you will take the time to go to their web sites and sign up for e-mail updates they are both very good about sending promotion offers.

I can't tell you anything about B&B's in Vegas--I don't think many people think about them when going to a city that has thousands of hotel rooms, many at a significant discount.

Check out many of the lesser known hotels and motels--some offer great bargains, especially mid-week, and are still on the Strip or near it. Some smaller casinos and older hotels and casinos downtown can give you a real bargain ! Friends of mine stayed at a lesser-known one in the older part of Vegas, and it was great. Not all the glitz and glamor--but , hey, you only sleep in the room, you spend the rest of your time doing....other things outside of the room, and outside of that hotel anyway !

Renting a car is a possibility, depending on how far you want to go. Just be sure you can park for free or nearly so, and you will do fine. One warning--lately the Strip has been having serious traffic jams during the commute hours, as many tourists just want to drive up and down the main streets to look at the marquees and the lights. Remember--those streets are used by the commuters who go to and from work, too ! It can be gridlock when everybody starts slowing down just to cruise up and down the Strip ! The same warning applies to the evening hours of the weekends.

Jack is right when he suggests that you avoid special event weekends. For next week's Nascar race and for the recent NBA all-star game, some hotels jacked (not pun intended Jack) their rates up by X5.

There are lots of off Strip motels and older downtown hotels. However, John B is correct to suggest that you can still find a cheap hotel on the Strip, if you avoid the busy season and weekends. I have stayed at Balleys for $55. Barbary Coast and Imperial Palace can also be okay. All three are right in the middle of the Strip.

I typically stay at the Orleans Casino which is just off the strip. I prefer this location because it has the amenities of a large scale resort without paying strip prices. I have stayed at this hotel for the past 4 visits to Las Vegas and have yet to be disappointed.

In addition, it has a shuttle to the strip, so you can get back and forth from the strip without having to rent a car.

The food at the Orleans is pretty good and you plenty of choices.

Okay...I stayed at the Hard Rock one time in August during the week tues-fri and it averaged about $99 per night. It is off the strip but it's only like a 2 minute drive to the strip. I highly suggest renting a car if you don't want to stay in Vegas and gamble the entire time. Like I went to the Hoover Dam and Red Rock etc. so it was worth it to rent a car....also since they know most people who stay in Vegas dont' rent cars the prices are pretty reasonable. I rented a Jeep Liberty for a week for like around 250 but I was also driving from Vegas to LA and staying in LA for a few extra days.

you can easily find a hotel on the strip that is cheaper... just hunt on travelocity, etc. and play around with the days a little and compare.

if you are looking for something off the strip, i would suggest Sunset Station. good prices, good casino, GREAT food.

If you plan to spend time on the strip though, get a hotel on the strip. first of all, you're going to be drinking.. and second traffic is terrible even when you DO know the roads... renting a car when you dont know the area, especially when its sooooo congested.. will get very frustrating. with a little effort you will find a good prices on the strip.

The hotels on Fremont Street downtown are great bargains. The North Tower of the Vegas Club is good, and if you don't care about a small room, the Golden Gate, although old, is fine.
