As individuals there is no reason to apologize, but governments can and should.

I won't accept the idea of reparations.

By the way, although slavery is now outlawed in every country on Earth, it is still widespread. There are an estimated 25,000 slaves (mainly sex-servers) in the United States. Slaves are commonly used on cocoa farms in some parts of Africa, while slaves (particularly children) make bricks and work in carpet factories in India. Sex servers (many underage, almost all female) work throughout Western Europe; most of them originally came from the former Soviet bloc or from Sub-Saharan Africa. Another center for slave (again, sex-servers) is Thailand. These women come from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Well, I'm not 160 years old, but I can tell you that what they did (the apology) was the right thing to do. Virginia had a great part in slavery, just go to wikipedia and search up slavery, Virginia will probably be there.

Even though Pi-Guy is right, I believe that the apology was meant as a community apology.

The biblical precedent is that sons should not have to pay for the sins of their fathers. Since no one alive has owned slaves, no one should be apolgizing for it. (I'm assuming that you're using the word "apologize" in the sense of an admission of error, not "a formal justification.")
