Gotta respond to some of these. Yes. They are the same age. Howard won the Rookie of the Year in his first year so you have to consider it his second season, while only playing 88 games, he still won it. Followed that up with the MVP-no sophmore slump so he is the real deal. Pujols has like 30 something career stolen bases so keep speed out of this. Pujols is however a perennial .300 30+ 100+ MVP canidate. Still looking for the best answer.

Yes, I know Howard is the best bargain ($900,000 for a player that had 58 hrs and 149 rbis in 06.)but as far as sustained productivity it is not even close.Listed below are the average offensive totals for the two players in a 162 game season.
Howard
AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BA SA
610 109 185 31 2 53 142 .303 .624
(Based on 247 career games)
Pujols
605 129 199 45 2 43 131 .332 .628
(Based on 932 career games)
As for the age thing:Pujols won National League ROY at age 21 after hitting .329 with 37 HR 130 RBI and SA of .610
Howard at age 21:.272, 6 HR 35 RBI and SA of .456 for Batavia of the NY-Penn League (Minor League A Ball)
At this point in their careers to compare Howard to Pujols is laughable.I'll take 6 years of sustained greatness at age 27 over 1 great year at 27 any time!!!!!!!!!

Pujols and Howard are both about the same age, and have put up similar numbers, albeit in a slightly different category. Pujols has more contact, while Howard has more power.
Assuming both are even hitting, the edge goes to Pujols.
Pujols is one of the best fielding 1B in the league, while Howard is considered a DH in the National League playing first. Also, Pujols can run, and can threaten 5-10 SB a year. That's something Howard cannot give.
So, I would choose Pujols over Howard, unless I'm looking for a DH on an already fast team.

Did someone say they would take Howard because hes younger, Pujols is 2 months younger than Howard. What an idiot, Pujols born January 16th 1980, Howard born November 19th 1979.........Just because Pujols has played 6 full seasons and Howard has only played one doesnt mean he's older. I'll take Pujols by a landslide........Howard will never touch his Pujols .331 career avg and has Pujols ever disapointed? NO....Pujols may be one of the best players ever.
Pujols is the only of the two that has a chance at winning the TRIPLE CROWN, because Pujols will always hit for a higher average then Howard

Pujols. I think Howard is a great player, but I would want to make sure he's not just a fluke. Pujols has been the best hitter in the game for the last 5 years, is a great team leader, and is also a great fielder. Howard has had one great season, and if he can keep on doing that, then I will think about changing my choice.

"I would have to go with the younger Howard" > Really? I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard that one. Ryan Howard is older than Albert Pujols by two months>
Ryan Howard>Born November 19th 1979
Albert Pujols>Born January 16th 1980
Pujols is a gold glove caliber 1st baseman, with good range, great arm, soft glove and he digs throws out of the dirt.
Howard has the range of a stump, terrible arm, glove of stone and the last time he dug one out was????
I think I might have to go with Pujols, he's been a star for 6 years. Howard had one good offensive year.
Albert Pujols - 6 seasons
BA-332 OB%-419 SLG-629 250HR
Only 3 other players in the history of baseball have BA over 330, OB% over 400 and a SLG over 600 - Babe Ruth - Lou Gehrig - Ted Williams ->Not bad company to be mentioned with>And Pujols is the only right handed hitter to do it.
Pujols=Clutch - big game player
Later: sorry "john doe" your answer was not up when I started putting mine together.
really later:Some people need to actually read the WHOLE answer. Notice the quotes around the first line geeez...
I would still rather have Pujols on my team >Howard is signed for ONLY one year for that 900K there dude!!
The score:
Pujols - 22
Howard - 4
Bonds? - 1

I would have to go with Albert Pujols, he is one of the most allround players in baseball being, maybe the most complete hitter in the league averaging about 40 HR 120 RBIs and .330 batting average every year, and still a very good fielder and while not the fastest player still a smert runner. While Ryan Howard looks as if he will turn into a great player he still has a ways to go before he is at Pujols' level.

Oh my gosh its Pujols. How many times has it been that he has come up in the bottom of the ninth and then got the game winning hit. He has played longer and proven himself. Howard yeah is good, but he's not as good as Pujols. Howard doesn't have the defense that Pujols has. He is a one man wrecking crew Pujols is with multiple three homerun games in his career.
Yeah Howard won the MVP, but Pujols was on the DL and still kept up with him. Pujols is unselfish and is not always looking for the solo shot homerun all the time, but he gets rallys going.

Pujols by a landslide and anyone who would choose Howard needs serious help. Howard has more power you say? Take him out of that band-aid box in Philly with the short RF porch and see how many HR's he has. Pujols is going to be known as one of the all time greats, Howard will not. Pujols, Pujols, Pujols, I can't say it anymore. Not to mention Howard showing up to camp 15 lbs heavier than last year, crying about his contract and the fact that he demanded a trade when he was in the minor leagues behind Thome. Get over yourself and easy on the buffet line, kid!

Pujols. He is more of a sure thing. You know what he's going to do year in and year out. Howard had a monster season, but the expectations will be set too high for him. It'll be interesting to see if he delivers. Not to mention, Pujols can steal bases.

i would have to say albert pujols, hands down. he is a gold glove first baseman. he has been a consistent offensive threat regardless of the position he played. for those who forget,he switched from third base to left field in his first few years in the league. yet he still managed to put up his customary .300/30/100 season. i dont give a sh*t about the "ryan howard has the highest salary ever for a player with less than two years of major league service"(kerry wood previously held the record at 690k). where is kerry wood now? howard has to produce both offensively and defensively as consistently as pujols has done before we can make this a closer comparison.
