Hey I swear I juz watched a show last night called Final 24 on Discovery Channel about Marvin Gaye's final 24 hrs before he died. And here I am with ur questions !
And yes he was shot by his father while he was so high on drug abuse. Marvin and father never had a healthy father and son relationship. They litterally hate each other. Marvin hates his father for his abusive ways and cross-dressing while he was growing up (His father like to wear his mother's clothes and shoes and walk around the house) So much so that he put an E to his real name Marvin Gay as he was brought up by so called homosexuality issues. His father hated Marvin for his love to "devil's music". His father surprisingly used to be a church minister.
He was actually retreating himself at his parents house after months of touring. During that period he was suffering from delusional due to years of drug abused and believe that people are trying to kill him. He gave a gun to his father to sort of protect him if his 'killer' come but unfortunately so sadly the killer was actually his father. He had put a gun in his killer's hand.
The final hours he had beaten his father as his father had scolded his mother whom Marvin held so preciously. Marvin's mother is like an angel to him. His father take a gun and shoot marvin in return ..
He died on the way to the hospital. It was sad very sad.
So i hope this info is ok for you.
Newae below is the source if you wanna see the documentary for urself.

Yes it's sad but true.
Birth: Apr. 2, 1939
Death: Apr. 1, 1984
Famed R&B singer produced by Motown Records. The son of an Apostolic preacher, Gaye was born in Washington, D.C., and learned to sing and play the organ in his father's church. After a stint in the Air Force, he formed his own groups before Harvey Fuqua lured him into to the latest edition of the singing group, the Moonglows. Berry Gordy (founder of Motown) heard Gaye singing with the group in a Detroit club during 1961 and offered him a solo deal- though before recording his own songs Gaye first served as a session drummer. Gordy and Gaye later became brother-in-law when Gaye married Anna Gordy (they later divorced), but they often locked horns over artistic direction and creative control. Marvin Gaye went on to be referred to as Motown's Prince. Among his recordings with Motown were "Stuborn Kinda Fellow," "Pride and Joy," "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing," and "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)." He also recorded with the likes of Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross and, most effectively, the James Brown discovery Tammi Terrell, who collapsed in Gaye's arms during a 1967 concert and died three years later of a brain tumor. Gaye convinced the Motown chairman Berry Gordy to let him record the occasional album of standards, and his 1971 song cycle "What's Going On". Gaye left Motown in 1981 and later recorded one of his last hits "Sexual Healing" with CBS Records. On April 1, 1984, the day before his birthday, Marvin Gaye was shot to death at his Los Angeles home by his father. His untimely death sent shockwaves across the nation and music world. In his artistic heart of hearts, Gaye longed to be a troubadour, the next Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra or Perry Como, singing standards by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Brecht and Weill. He even told confidant and biographer David Ritz at one point, "I never wanted to shake my ***... I wanted to sit on a stool and sing soft love songs."
