OKay, so I've had my betta fish for about two-three months now, and recently I've noticed these black specs all over his tank.

They are not actually on the fish, but they are on the fake plants, the gravel, decorations, and even a tiny bit on the tank walls. My betta does not seem to be bothered visibly by this, I have seen no change in behaviour, apetite, appearence, etc, so I don't think that they are causing any harm as of yet.

He lives in a 2.5 gal tank, unfiltered, and (I know, it's bad) the water hasn't been changed in maybe 2 1/2 weeks. His water temperature is 79-80 degrees roughly, and there are no other animals or living plants in the tank.

Every day the number of little black specs increases, and I'm getting worried.

What are those black specs, how/should I get rid of them, and are they dangerous to my fish??

Thank you!

Try filtering the tank maybe the specks are mold

A test kit is good to have on hand if something looks wrong but I wouldn't worry about testing the water often with a betta. Most people keep these fish in a gallon or so container without a filter (like blue fin's wife). During the week between water changes the quality of the water goes straight to hell. This is how I was keeping my betta for a while and I tested a few times so I know. This nasty water doesn't seem to bother the bettas (because they can breathe at the top). So if you are running a 5 gallon with a filter and doing anything near regular water changes your betta is probably way better off than most bettas. You may want to check the water once in a while but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you are looking for a good test kit stay away from the strips and get the master kit. Liquid kits tend to be more accurate and cheaper in the long run. Hope this helped.

In all the years of having bettas I've never heard of this....
I'd wash the tank and decortations, put in new gravel and see if it comes back....

ALSO remember to put in the PH balancer/water conditioner in the water because bettas need that!

Well I looked all over the web as I have never heard of such a thing. Maybe its a type of algae or some kind of bug. i'd go spend 20 cents buy a pair of feeder guppies and see if they take care of your problem. They will nibble at everything.

each and every each and every now and then Betta Fish substitute hues over the years. I had 2, the two one in all them in many situations went from purple to purple to blue...it replaced into fairly weird and wonderful. while they finally have been given previous, they lost in simple terms about all shade.

You will have to change water more often. I've never heard of these things. I'd get rid of them.

That's your fish's excrement dear. Clean your tank. If you don't, your betta will eventually get sick.
