Eliminate the cross, or maybe have a cross and muslim crescent with it, side by side? Wouldn't that be more inclusive?

alejandra, it sounded to me like you were describing the union jack. i'm talking about the flag of england, which is white with a cross and many muslims find this offensive

first, the English flag is a mark of England's heritage and history just as the Turkish flag with a crescent moon represents Turkey's.

moreover, if England would be to incorporate every religious symbol that exists, the flag would be full and no longer represent England's history.

and finally, England's diverse population is something to be proud of, but it should not erase the foundations it was built on. is a flag what determines equality in a country? and, why punish England and take away their flag when it has been a part of its growth for hundreds of years when other countries may have seemingly neutral flags, but their policies reflect they have real problems with discrimination?

The England flag (St Georges cross, Red cross on a white background) was around long before the crusades in which the knights wore it on their armor, shields, and wherever else they could fit it. The Muslim community finds it offensive because of the crusades where the king wanted to convert every Muslim to Christians. It has a much deeper history than that and should be regarded as such. It will probably always have the hatred of the Muslims however, just as the swastika does in our times.
The swastia symbol was more of a good luck charm denoting the sun and aspects of nature. The Nazis used it for a different purpose and is now and forever will be married to the Third Reich.

the Union Jack is not any kind of religious symbol, as such. King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England, becoming James I in 1603. This united Scotland and England in to one country consisting of 2 states. The first Union Jack was designed of the traditional Scottish flag, super-imposed in to the Traditional English flag.

The modern Union Jack has additional red stripes to represent the traditional irish flag, when Norther Ireland became part of the union.

In the great land of the United Kingdom, you are offered great freedom to practice your religion and display it's symbols. Enjoy your freedom but rememeber, your muslim symbols have nothing to do with the history behind the symbol of this great union.

Putting a muslim cresent on the Union Jack, would be like tattoo-ing a Star of David or a Wiccan Pentagram to the Stars and Stripes, just because people of those faiths emigrated to the USA.
The American flag's symbols also represent the formation of our union. Modern anthropology does not change what they stand for.

Show respect for the traditions of the land you came to, as the land you came to shows respect for your traditions.

Cheers :-)

No.
Perhaps those Muslims could move to a country that already has a crescent on it.
