I want to become a 5th or 6th grade teacher. What steps do I have to take after high school to become a teacher? Such as what major do I take and are there any other courses needed?

You can major in education. But, I recommend picking a different major and then doing an Alternative Teaching Certificate Program to get certified. Those programs are less than a year and lead to professional certification. Look on your state's Department of Education website for more info.

Why should you pick a different major than education? Because if you major in something like biology or spanish, those areas would be much more useful to you if you decide you are sick of teaching after a few years. It is much harder for people who major in education to find a job outside of education because it's all they know--they have no content knowledge of any other field. If you major in spanish, for instance, you have content area in a language and that will open doors. It is better to have a content area, plus, you will know your subject area much better than an education major--they will have more "book smarts" on all the education theory, but they don't take a lot of coursework in specific content areas.

Here in California, you would generally obtain a Liberal Arts degree (Bachelor). This degree would expose you to a wide variety of subjects, such as English, History, Math, Science,etc... and teach you how to teach these to elementary school students. Then attend a year and a half teacher preparation program (credential)
