Get a clear nail hardening polish (like Sally Hansen's Hard as nails, or OPI's nail envy). Apply two coats and then each day apply another coat. Do this for a week or so, then take all polish off, file if needed, and start over with the clear polish. If you get a manicure with a color, apply one coat over the color (or have the nail lady do it) and then apply another coat each day. That will help with chipping as well. Sounds like a lot of work, but it does the trick.

How is your over all health? Nails, skin and hair often show signs of a health problem. If that is good then you may have to have overlays to add strength. The only other thing I can tell you is to watch what you do and how you do it. Many people have nail problems because they are very active and they don't shy away from popping the soda can tab with their unprotected nails. Car doors are also a big watch out.

Get a "silk-wrap" at the nail-salon.
Or ask them about what they can do, to help keep your nail's structure and length. (Not every place offers the same service)

Trim them regularly to be shorter than that. I carry a nail clipper at all times to deal with breaks.
