Boy, do I have experience with this one. We went through this with my son...and what I was surprised to learn is that just not pooping very often doesn't = constipation. My MD actually said it was ok if they didn't poop every day, but to treat more agressively if they act like "going" is painful or causing them strain. My MD also said that as infants get older, it's very common for breastfed infants to not poop very often because there's very little waist produced from breastmilk (I had always been told the opposite). I also spoke with a dietician who agreed with the above and suggested any fruits that started with P - Plums, Prunes, Peaches, Pears. You can also buy pear juice - which helps a lot and tastes better than prune (in my opinion). She suggested rice cereal mixed with a couple tablespoons of pear juice or prune juice.

Bananas (in excess) can cause constipation...so maybe steer clear of those for a couple of days. If things get really bad, there are infant glycerine suppositories that work really well -- but you don't want to use them very often and I'd just check with your doc first. To use them, you cut them in half (don't use the whole thing). I think the brand we bought was Fleet, but we only had to resort to that once. I have seen several people on these posts say that 6 month olds don't get constipated -- oh yes - they do. But do remember that if they go once every couple of days, they are probably ok. I was very surprised to learn that!

Try prunes. Give your baby prune juice or even just plain water {heck even 100% pure fruit juice of any kind helps move bowels}. Constipation is caused because the stool sits to long in the intestine. If this is a frequent problem take him to see a GI doctor. My daughter who is now 13 going on 14 was often constipated as a baby and it wasn't nothing I was doing or not doing was just something that she was not so blessed with and she ended up having to be on long term laxative prescribed by her Dr but I am sure this is not your child's case. My son is 9 months old and since he was 6 months old he's had 100% fruit juice and his bowels are healthy!

Prunes, honey! Make that whole system work! That baby will sh*t a sh*tstorm! A whole jar of prunes, mixed with 2 ounces formula or whatever you give your baby, and make the hole in the nipple a little bigger, and that baby will sleep all night, wake in the morning, and blow that diaper all to hell! Good Luck! Also, don't listen to the jackass that asked "what are you feeding that poor thing?" It's your baby, and if you wanted to feed the baby pizza, it's none of their business! I'm not saying to feed the baby pizza, but a lot of oatmeal, or the dried cereals will give a little baby diarrhea. Just be sure to give your baby lots of fruits and veggies, and occasionally, a jar of prunes if the baby gets constipated. It DOES happen to all babies. I've had 3 kids, I should know.

in the journey that your infant has not had gastrointestinal surgical operation, a severe rotavirus with gastrointestinal bleeding and hospitalization, or a good rarer genetic situation called galactosemia, your infant isn't lactose illiberal. She may well be illiberal to cow's milk or something in even though she is ingesting. She additionally might have a situation called Hirschsprung's, that's element of the intestine without nerves. babies with this situation *on no account* bypass stool and get very sick. Do you notice the pediatrician on a regular basis so as that s/he can help your infant in having a bowel stream? There ought to be a extra useful answer.

my gosh some people are so mean in their responses! I have a 6 month old daughter...is she/he on baby food yet? The oatmeal or rice cereal constipates, so, you need to balance it out with fruit in the morning...mix the fruit with the oatmeal/cereal. The fruit that helps move the stool are apricots and pears. I think bananas constipate, at least it seems to me they do. So try to mix in those fruits, and stick with the cereal because they need the iron. Hope that helps! Take care

My daughter went through the same thing. I even had her examined and tested. Some children just go through that. Don't listen to these stupid people that think they "know it all" and can pass judgement. It just happens sometimes. I just gave my baby water and lots of fiber based baby food until she got better. But it takes time and patience. Your baby will grow out of it.

Depends on how old the child is. If she is a newborn, it may not be constipation, she just hasn't developed her muscles yet. If she is an older infant (older than a few months), try feeding her more greens.
