Five bad answers down and one good answer to go.
Peter is a clairevoyant and an empath. They hope you don't figure out the clairevoyant thing.
He picks up powers when he senses them, either in his dreams as in the case of Nathan and Ted ot through dirct contact with the powers as in the case of Hiro, Sylar, Mark, Isaac, Claude, and Claire.
The clairevoyance allowed him to pick up Ted and Nathan's powers, dreaming he was them and experiencing their powers in his sleep. He has never actually met Ted but Peter almost lost it with Claude and had he not been hit Peter might have gone nuclear.
His empathic ability has allowed him to connect with everyone else when they used their powers in front of him and he could feel their powers. He met Hiro on the train bending time. Sylar attacked him with telekenesis. Mark tried to read his mind afterwards. Isaac painted in fornt of him. Claude went invisible infront of him. And, claire heal herself at the school.
Missing from the list of possible powers he might have now are Eden and the Haitian who might have had an effect on him at the school and Charlene who Sylar attacked and took her power.
Note he has not exibited Sylar's ability to shoot laser beems out of his fingers yet but he was not around when Jacklyn's head was cut open. Claire was.
He has proven that he can use all of the other powers though. He used Hiro's when he stopped the tazer darts, Sylar's when he threw Bennett and the Haitian around, Mark's, he used in jail, Isaac's, he used in the loft, Claude's he has been using for a while now, and Claire's and Nathans he has used twice each.
The big question is what happens if one of these heros dies? Can he channel their power from the dead like Sylar.
The new girl on the show is supposed to be able to channel the dead so that may be the solution to that problem. If Peter gets her power then he can hold on to his powers regardless. His only problem is the Haitian who if he gets the drop on him can erase Peter's mind of all he knows. I would have done that with Sylar but they want his knowledge.
Meanwhile Sylar, now has super hearing so he has the advantage of not being able to be snuck up on by an invisible man.

I look for a Peter vs. Syler showdown - who will absorb the other's powers first.
Considering Peter should be able to fly and turn invisible my money's on him. But now Syler has super hearing, so who knows?
Since he healed afer crashing on the car, he evidently "keeps" the abilty to use the powers of anyone he comes in contact with. He just has to learn to control the ability.

Peter absorbs other people's abilities when he comes into close contact with them. Sylar dosen't absorb people's abilities, I think he eats their brains to take on their powers lol.

He absorbs the other Heroes abilities when touching them, making him better than Sylar since he isn't killing anyone and he can heal (like Claire), which is something Sylar can't do.

He keeps everyone's abilities after being exposed to them. That's what the invisible guy taught him. All he has to do is think about their ability and he can manifest it.

I think he's like Rogue from the x-men but not to the extreme that he'll kill them if he drains them-like she can.
