My teacher probably told me, but I forgot. I know it's not 1, because the guy who sits behind me has about 1.3, and I know he's not as powerful as a horse.

"R. D. Stevenson and R. J. Wasserzug published an article in Nature 364, 195-195 (15 Jul 1993) calculating the upper limit to an animal's power output. The peak power over a few seconds has been measured to be as high as 14.9 Hp. However, for longer periods an average horse produces less than one horsepower."

so a horse can reach a max of 14.9hp

and as for your humans "a healthy human can produce about 1.2hp briefly and sustain about 0.1hp indefinitely, and trained athletes can manage up to about 0.3 horsepower for a period of several hours."

I am pretty sure that a horse has about one horsepower.

When you say that your classmate has 1.3 hp, the horse may have less, but the horse is capable of doing that for a longer period of time. Your classmate wouldn't be able to do that for hours on end.

Actually, a good horse can put out more than one horsepower for a while. It depends on how long, what kind of horse, and what the horse is doing.
