I've been ripping my hair out trying to get rid of this AOL instant messaging virus. I've done everything. I cleaned my registry, deleted my internet history, cookies, temp fies, downloaded Ad-Aware. PLEASE help me, I'm desperate. I have another virus that always gives me this WinAntivirus popup that won't go away until I close all my internet windows. I'm on the urge of wiping out my harddrive and starting over, but I don't want to do that. PLEASE HELP!

You did not mention the anti virus software you use. I suggest you first figure out the name and definition of the virus you have. Get your system scanned for free at pandasoft, norton or treadmicro and post what results came up. Then use your antivirus software and see if anything comes up. Also if you use Ad-Adware, you should also use Spybot Search and Destroy alongside it. One picks up what the other doesn't. If this all fails yo really should invest in more quality anti-spyware like webroot spy sweeper or Sunbelt counter spy. These are guaranteed to rid you of your problems.

Also a temporary solution to any virus problem like this is to restart your computer in safe mode with networking. Do so by hitting either the F7 or F8 (I don't recall which one) repeatedly and selecting boot in safe mode with networking. Also if you have a firewall, activate it's network shutdown feature to shutdown all internet activity. These options will allow you to continue working if you are on a deadline and don't have the time for all this crap

TRY SYSTEM RESTORE BEFORE REFORMATTING YOUR PC. You won't lose any work. This is usually the best option

Maybe you have to change your anti-virus. Try avast! Its good anti virus and it's free! You can download it at www.avast.com.

Just in case you do not know, uninstall your current anti virus before installing avast. You should also turn your Internet connection off first before installing/uninstalling.

Avast have been protecting my computer for almost two years.

If installing new anti virus(avast) don't work, You should reformat your PC.

Go to WWW.TRENDMICRO.COM and run HouseCall scan.
After removing all infections, run CCLEANER, run SPYBOT, run ADAWARE, reboot.
RUN CHECKDISK, then DEFRAG
There's also the system restore feature. As a last measure back up everything important then format the Hard Drive and reinstall the OS.

You need a virus protection software, ad-adware, just wont cut it on his own, that mostly for spyware not virus's. Try AVG or another virus protection software.
