You need to drink at least 42oz of liquid, before your appointment. You are suppose to finish it within an hour before your appt. It's acts as a mirror for the tech. to see better. They will let you go to the bathroom halfway thru the appt. Good Luck!

no..you dont need to drink a ton ..just drink a little about 30 minutes before your test , or just hold whatcha got!
many clinics or hospitals still prefer to have patients arrive with a full bladder simply because, in more cases than most OB docs would care to admit , patients arent as far along as they thought! Any ulltrasound before 16 weeks , it's advisable to have the full 40 oz routine , however if you're sure you'r at 18 weeks , you can hold off on the 40 oz , and just drink 12 oz of juice , so baby is active!
An overly full bladder can actually push the uterus backwards ,making things harder to see. Essentially , the bladder in earlier pregnancy acts as a window , pushing the colon out of the way and providing a fluid " window" . As your uterus gets larger in the second trimester , the bladder begins to push the uterus backwards ebhind that colon we needed out of the way . Aftr 16 weeks , there is usually enough amnioitc fluid to act as a window.
What IS important for us to see is you cervix . We need just enough in your bladder to accurately measure the cervical length and document that there isn't any funneling or widening. We also need to be able to see that the placenta is up and away from the cervix .
That's it!!! Good luck , enjoy your ultrasound !

If I remeber right when you are that earlier ones, you need a full bladder. I would still call, you never know what they have planned. Also if you drink a lot of OJ, the vitamin C makes the baby really active for the ultrasound!

At my clinic they don't have you drink a certain amount after 16 weeks, but they do say not to relieve yourself for an hour before the ultrasound.
You still need a bit of urine in the bladder for the sound waves to transmit good. They can still do it without that, but the pictures are better if there is something in there to bounce off of.

at my 20 week u/s they said to drink water, well have a full bladder. and i did but i almost peeded myself, lol. well this time around i had an u/s at 23 weeks and they didnt say anthing about having a full bladder, so went with an empty bladder. however i would suggest becasue you are 18 weeks to drink and have a full bladder, it will help to see all those parts and help to tell you the sex.

Drink up better to be safe then have to cancel out on the oppoinment because your bladder wasnt full.. Or so I have been told.. All of my Ultrasounds I have had to have a full bladder. If you do not need one then you will be able to relieve yourself before it begins...

drink more than you thought possible. if you don't and they can't see what they need to see, it won't be pretty. you will either have to reschedule and come back later, which would drive me crazy!!! OR they will make you sit in the waiting room and chug water, then sit there for an hour and wait for the bladder to fill enough for them to see. i had to sit there and chug water one day, then sit and wait. after an hour they still couldn't see well enough and i had to go all the way home and return about a week later! needless to say, i was frantic. and the next week i drank more than a water buffalo!
