I know hostile people are hard to deal with, but you can't make a grievance when he hasn't truly done anything but be "brusque". My only advice for you is to not allow him the satisfaction of your conversation or displeasure. He obviously enjoys the fact that he has that kind of power over people, and you showing him that you dislike it so is just feeding his pathetic little high of the day. Just ignore him and make a point not to think or talk to anyone about him and eventually you won't care any longer.

Take him aside and tell him that you'll get more bees with honey than vinegar. His brusqe-ness and lack of common courtesy isn't making him any friends.
In today's world, it's not about what you know or even who you know- it's how you relate to those you meet, and he's screwing himself. He needs to be aware that as he continues to be an @ss, he eliminates opportunities- and nobody's going to want to come to a church led by a jerk.
One idea I don't know if it's an option or not, but... Let him know that as long as he's a jerk, you and everyone else will refuse to work with him.

Being rude or unsocial is not an offense that I would take to the boss. You will seem more like someone who is wanting to start trouble. Save your reports for legitimate work related complaints.

Why not put the guy on IGNORE?? He's obviously insecure and has some serious social issues. As long as he is not going out of his way to insult or demean people, leave him be.
Some people can't or don't want to be fixed. Focus your energies
on socially well adjusted types.

Don't take his behavior to heart, and it's not your job to fix it. If he causes you problems at work make a formal complaint. If he is simply an ill mannered fool, have pity on him. Whatever makes him so grumpy must really be causing him pain he is not willing to face. I don't think it is OK to take it out on others, but I am sure he knows not what he does.

Don't smack him. You will end up looking like the bad guy and getting in trouble.
If his lack of cooperation is interfering with your work, or if he is harrassing or threatening you, take it up with your boss. Otherwise, just let him be a jerk.

That's like 3 different questions all rolled into one and it seems more like you just want validation for complaining about him.
If he is a jerk it will take care of itself, he will be crushed under the weight of his own a-holeish behavior. You complaining about his attitude will make you look like a tattle-tale... and no one respects a tattle-tale.
