How do I get a faster internet connection?

I have Comcast internet service and a Linksys wireless-b broadband router. My connection is 100mb/s. Can anyone tell me how to get it up to 500mb/s or even 1gb/s? Do I have to get a faster router?

100mb/s is your computer Ethernet card to broadband router maximum speed. You can buy a 1000mb/s Ethernet cards and 1000 mb/s routers. This will do nothing to increase your internet speed.

The internet speed com coming into your home is most likely about 7 Mb/s download / 2.5 Mb/s Upload. One fourteenth of your current router speed.

I would expect 100Mb/s Internet in 20 years. By then, I would expect our current concept how we gather information , a person sitting in front of a computer typing away in front of a screen on the internet, would begin to be laughable. Something old people did.

you have got a couple of networking concepts confused. first there is the speed that the internet connects to your cable modem. a home service is offering between 6 and 10Mbps. Make sure you have comcast check your modem out to make sure it can use the new features. Next have a tech out to check your wiring to make sure you are getting the max speed. Second your wireless b router can only send data at 11Mbps. A g based router will run at 54Mbps, and a N router can get up to 108Mbps. and then you have to have the right adapter on you pc. if you keep your b, the routers will downgrade to 11Mbps. your wired lan connector can support up to 100Mbps if you are running a 100Mbps ethernet lan cable. a 1Gbps port would require a 1Gbps lan service. so no matter what your router supports, or your ported connection, comcast is not going to go any faster. if you really want some faster direct internet speed, you can get a T1 leased circuit, but those run about 400$ per month. another way to get a little bit better speed is to hook you pc directly to the cable modem, if you are the only pc that needs a connection. a router by its nature, does cut back on the speed of downloads, since there is some software overhead in translating the packets and ip addresses. I have noticed a 4 to 1 differnence.
