Okay,so me and my parents are probley going to be moving to a farm with horses and I have experence from riding lessons and we will be getting around 3-5 horses and we won't have a stable hand and I wondered what we would do on vacation because we don't want to have to hire someone to work and feed them for like 2 weeks out of the whole year because it would take too much training, because some people have different ways to handle horses. So what should we do?

Well unless you can take your horses w/ you on vaca., which in some situations you can, your going to have to leave them in the care of a trusted person.
Consider temporarly boarding them at a trusted stable that you are involved with. leave detailded instructions on feed, turnout, etc. and let the stable hands do the rest and maybe even see if you scheduale the trainer to ride and excercise your horse since you won't be around. A good barn has trained horse smart staff who can take proper care of your horse. that would be the best way to do it however this could get a little pricey.

The other way to do it is to have a trusted family member or friend with horse experiance to take care of them. Leave detailed instructions and have a list of emergancy contacts posted somewhere.

good luck!

Basically you just get a babysitter if your horses are outside. Someone you know who can feed the horses. If they are outside, all they need to do is throw them hay and make sure the water is filled.

We have left our horses alone for 4 days max in the summer. We also have an automatic waterer, shelter (they are outside 24/7) and feed them a round bale, as well as 6 acres of pasture.

Since you are going to be gone for 2 weeks straight, you need to hire someone, even if they handle horses differently.Basic horse care is the same and most people know how to handle horses correctly if they have enough experience.
Go to another barn and ask around-- see if anyone wants to make some extra money for 2 weeks. An average pay (around here) is about $7 an hour, and with only 3-5 horses and cleaning stalls, it would be about an hour a day.

If they are outside and just need to be fed, watered, and checked on, you could pay $50-$75 for the whole two weeks.

Okay, so what the people did across the street from before they moved was they got me to take care of their horses, and their only boarder on some nights, whenever they would leave. But there are also those out there that can be hired to take care of the horses. The owner did that when I was leaving for the week, the same week she left. Just make sure whoever you have take care of your horses can be trusted.

I'd go the neighbor or friend route. Stabling is really pricey and I've heard some shifty stuff about how the horses are treated.

If they're in a large enough field (three-acres per horse in a lush enviroment, five-acres per horse if you don't get a whole lot of rain in your area) they'll be fine with a sufficent water source and maybe a backup roll of hay. Just make sure someone stops by daily to look in on them.

You should join 4-H Club is you are 21 or under. Or you parents can join as volunteers.
They have a wonderful Horse Club where you can learn all kinds of stuff and have fun with other horse lovers even competitions if you choose.
This group is very horse savy. They are a tight knit group that help each other out. They will help you when you go out of town and just help them if they need it.
It is a better way to go that hire someone or get someone who is not so good with your horse.
I highly recomment 4-H club. It is fun and educational. My kids were in it and I was a leader for years.

Good Luck

You may be better off taking them to a reputable stable and have them boarded. Atleast they will be takin care of. But you must make sure they are properly vaccinated first,if that is your only option.

Maybe you should wait until you actually physically get them, then you should know what to do. If you don't want to hire anyone, then don't go on vacation.

You usually ask a neighbor or friend to look in on your horses.

Youre living in the future. You may never get horses - you might get cows though. Read Mad Magazine and live by their credo....what? me worry?
