We have a wireless network and I just brought home my computer which I have never used on this network. I thought I had a key on it, but I was never prompted for it so I just clicked connecct. It says it is connected, but I can't load any internet programs. What can I do to get it working?

Go to a computer that does work. Log on to your router. Check security settings, access lists, SSID names, and so on. You should get an idea of what is wrong from this. Set your laptop to match.

No - dont put your laptop in the DMZ. It will be exposed to the net without the benefit of NAT and be hacked into within 5 minutes. You just need it as a DHCP client within the NAT address range.

A couple of things to check. First, if this computer has never been on the network, likely your home router is not configured to allow access by another computer. You will have to go into your router configuration and add an additional IP in the DMZ for your machine. Your best bet is to call your ISP for help with this, or do a goodle search to help you. After this is done, make sure you are pulling an IP address.
Go to Start > Run and type 'cmd' (no quotes) and click OK. In the command window, type 'ipconfig' and see if it returns an IP address.

in the journey that your computers the two have an ethernet card what you like is a undeniable Ethernet cable... a crossover cable. This cable routes the transmit pair from one card into the get carry of pair of the different card... and vica versa. With which you do not want a router or hub, even yet it purely works for 2 computers component-to-component. in case you ever desire to connect >2 computers then use elementary (not crossover) cables from the ethernet ports on the computers to the ethernet ports on the linksys. you're able to make confident the computers the two have IP addresses interior the comparable selection - in the journey that your linksys allocates IP addresses then the two would be dispensed ones interior the comparable selection. be careful in the journey that your linksys allocates the comparable subnet as your wifi... because of the fact then your wifi equipped computing device would be very puzzled approximately the place it fairly is meant to deliver information and could probable not confer with the different computing device or the wifi. in the journey that your wifi makes use of 192.168.a million.something then use 192.168.a hundred.something addresses on the linksys or on the crossover cable. on the different hand, equip the two computers with wifi and use the wifi router to connect the computers jointly.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting...

If that doesn't work, there could be a problem with the settings in your Internet Explorer - Go to Internet Options and set them to automatic to get the best results (generally)

Check to see if it has an IP address assigned to it from the router and not a self assigned IP address.
