What are best and worst parts of living in Montreal?

Not sure I interpret the question the same way as my other collegues: I understood you meant the pros and the cons of living in Montreal vs the others answered in which parts of the city they prefer or hate...anyways, I will answer using the first interpretation...

The best part of living in Montreal is having as much cultural choices as living in a bigger city (say NY) but not having the inconveniences of a bigger city. So many cultural restaurants, different music concerts, nightlife, parks, festivals, sports, etc. but no rampant violence, endless traffic and expensive prices (exception of the parking meters which have skyrocketed to insane prices!).

The worst part of living in Montreal is the sadness to see the city slowly drift more and more in (general) poverty because the population does not realize the level of debt and taxes is killing their economy, driving away investments elsewhere and I am sad to say, we are too ******* bureaucratic, proud and spoiled to make the sacrifices needed to correct the situation. Nobody wants to make an effort for anything anymore around here unless it is to defend their own little selfish assets and privileges and that is the sad truth.

Avoid anything that have to do with north part of Montreal,including Laval.

Montreal west is fine. Montreal east have many bars but if you go behond st-laurent and st-catherine east you fall in the gay/lesbian part of the city. Most of them are concentrate in montreal east.

Gay and lesbian are not violent but if you hang out in that part, street gangs of teenagers may target you thinking you are in to this lifestyle, so be careful

The worst part of Montreal is definitely Montreal north, saint-francois, Laval-ouest and all area that you find ethnic gang.
