I freshen a working garbage disposal by cutting up a lemon into the disposal.
If yours isn't working, I would suggest squeezing it and let the lemon juice coat the inside part of your drain.

In addition to the reset button on the disposal, doublecheck the circuit breaker. I thought mine croaked at Thanksgiving when I overloaded it, but I was wrong. I just fished out the bulk of the food (GROSS!!), flipped the circuit breaker off then on, then pushed the reset switch on the disposal. Oila! Problem solved.
As far as freshening, lemon juice works well. Just get one of those plastic lemons (RealLemon) at the store and squeeze the whole thing into the disposal and let it sit. Next time you go into the kitchen (1/2 hour or so) wash your hands well with an antibacterial soap. The suds will help with the bacteria, and by the time you rinse your hands clean, the disposal will be rinsed well, too. Hope this helps!!
Blessings

It may not be broken. Besides the reset button others have mentioned, on the very bottom is an insert for a hex-headed wrench. It is there to clear away objects that have the disposal jammed. If your disposal hums loudly and doesn't spin, this is what is wrong with it. Insert the correct size hex wrench into the slot and turn it in both directions until the obstruction is clear.

i cut up a lemon and put in a bowl with water and boil that in the microwave for 2 or 3 minutes, and let it sit for 5 more in it. wipe out the microwave, then dump the lemon and water down the disposer and run it, if the hints help you get it running. otherwise, just pour the lemon water down it. kill two birds with one lemon, so to speak. good luck, hope you get it fixed. p.s. if the landlord rented you an apartment with a disposer, you have the right to have a working one. tell him he has 30 days to fix it or you will and deduct the cost from the rent. there's not a thing that he can do to you for doing that. it is a health hazard to have it not work and collect food junk in it.

try utilising vinegar with baking soda. If it retains, you've were given to call a plumber to take the pipes aside and word if there is something in there making them scent. i purchased a house quite a few year decrease back and about after a month, the kitchen sink stopped draining. I had to call in a plumber. the previous proprietors had merely poked a hollow sufficiently large via the clogged grease and gunk merely to get via till the homestead bought. i become livid! It ended up costing me about $500 to get it fixed.

Go to home depot... But yourself a 20 lb sledgehammer. Stand in front of the disposal and firmly grasp the hammer. Swing it over your head, avoiding the chandelier and swing swiftly down, demolishing the beast. Your problems will soon be over. Get a broom.

sprinkle with baking soda, let sit, then rinse with clean water. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and will not too corrosive on your disposal insides.
