I am trying to remember why this could occur. If someone suffered from damage to the sciatic nerve and had surgery to suture it together, how could it be that the sensation seems to be reversed from the lateral and medial sides of the knee?

The sciatic nerve is a bundle, not an individual nerve cell axon. If the surgeon reversed the sensory nerves when reattaching the sciatic nerve, then sensations would be reversed.
