Sometimes when the thrust washers in the gearbox get worn, the slack in the gear cluster can let a gear pop out, since helical gears create quite a lot of side force, especially in the lower gears. I used to have a '77 Mini, and it did it as well. After a while, I had to hold it in 2nd, or it would just pop out every time (first gear wasn't a problem - it had straight-cut gears.)

Unfortunately, the only fix for this is to rebuild the gearbox, since replacing the thrust washers requires removing all the guts from the box.

Good luck!

that could be from a couple of different things. one being the trans mount being bad, another could be a motor mount as well. then theres the not fully engaging into gear. the blocker rings on the main shaft arn't fully letting the gear slide in properly. could be a worn syncro or teeth on the gear itself. that really depends on how much or bad the gears have been grinded in during shifting. start with the mounts then work towards the more expensive things.

i own a shop, and you may have a bad synchronize in it causing this to happen,it if happens to land on that particular one it will make it do this once in a while, all you can do is pull it down and check it,and it could also be a bad mount causing it to do this,it will knock one out of gear once in an while, good luck.
