Modulator valve on the transmission if it is an automatic. I had a datsun engine rebuilt because i thought the rings were bad. Imagine my surprise once I got the thing running it was still smoking. SO much smoke at stop signs and red lights. Huge cloud. I took it to a mechanic and he changed the modulator valve, $12 and it fixed it. Check the vacuum line from the transmission to the manifold if it has transmission fluid in it then that is your problem. It may use oil but usually that much smoke is a result of transmission fluid. Change the plugs after you get it fixed. Had this happen to two fords as well.
When the modulator valve, which is vacuum controlled, goes bad it leaks transmission fluid back through the line to the intake manifold causing serious smoke. After a while you will notice the transmission fluid needing more added.

What you described sounds typical of a modulator valve. The fact that it is a ford makes it even more likely. Of the problems it could be the modulator valve is the cheapest. It could be rings or blown head gasket but it does not sound like it. That cloud you leave at the red lights it so typical of the modulator valve problem. The valve causes smoke mostly when sitting at a light. I would not notice smoke while driving down the road but as I sat at a light smoke would start rolling out. I agree it is embarrassing.

Noticed your last update, take it back to the people who did your transmission work and tell them what I told you. It may be related to the work you had done.

If it smoke a gaggle once you first start up it you want seals on the valve guides. Valve seals enable oil to leak into the combustion chamber and then burns off once you start up it causing alot of smoke. If it maintains to smoke after warming up, then you definately've a issue with rings or the valve seals are so some distance lengthy gone that it helps oil to drip into the cylinder each and each of the time. this may also be a head gasket blown between an oil port and the cylinder. wish this enables.........reliable luck !

Excessive smoke usually means that the engine is burning oil. You really need to have your car checked by a mechanic.

I do believe your rings are shot. Oil is bypassing them and being burnt. You need a motor job or a new engine.

what kind of car is it ? and what color smoke? it could be a head gasket or cracked head if it is white smoke or if blue smoke it could be bad rings.
