Criticism. That's the only way to strengthen your skills. Never have your friends read your work.
There is all sorts of writer's workshops (similar to book of the month clubs) where you go to improve upon writing. You can go and read and bash others writings, but ultimately that's what will make you tougher ...and more marketable.

First, write about what you know. If you have no intererest in, for example, Harry Potter, it woudl be hard for you do write a detailed interesting paper. But if you are a huge Potter fan, the words will just roll out and you will incorporate some of JK Rowling's magnificent voclabulary.
As my English teacher once said, never use a $10 word, when a $3 will do. You may love to use the word "ubiquitous", but the words' Common" or "plain" do not require a dictionary.
That said, keep a thesarus handy to broaden your own and your readers vocabulary.
Practice writing by keeping a journal. It's a good way to excercise your thoughts. Write in your head every minute. If you see a pond, heavy traffic, a cracked sidewalk, think about how you would describe it to someone who can't see what you are seeing. Try describing color without using references to color, or a sunrise without references to color, but instead, for example, use music to detail the sunrise. By taking you writing outside "of the box" you will take your reader with you.

I'd read good books, that are highly recommended, hang out at a coffee shop or some other environment that makes you at ease. Read, write, whatever. Try this: my english teacher had our class write about whatever was in our mind at that moment. Whether you have something or now write about what's around you. Just write! Anything, and no censorship; don't let anyone read it if you don't want to because most likely they won't know what you're talking about or they might get offended. (lol) Who knows? It helped me for sure. I write better blogs now, I think.

Read, read and read some more. Good writers are good readers. Also, write every day. Just like any talent writing has to be honed. Keep a blog, write in a journal, write a poem every day, do enough to stay sharp and on the ball.

You should have great adjectives. (Example: Enourmous instead of big.) Your Ideas should be good. (Not like writing about a day staying home doing the dishes.)
