I personally don't recommend the portable swing due to that you won't be able to use it for only a couple of months (and I really mean a couple of months). on the other hand the non-portable swing are great and you get yours moneys worth, I personally recommends Power-Plus Plug-In™ (front-to-back) swing by fisher price is a lot better than the rainforest one the reason why the raiforest brakedown a lot faster(trust me). The rainforest was release in mid december.

well, it depends on how much traveling you do, and how open your baby is to changes in his routine. If you travel a lot, or spend any significant (more than a single day) away from home on a regular basis, go for the portable one- that way you can always have it with you. If you tend to stay at home more often, and your baby can be comforted in other ways than swinging while you are away, then buy the larger version. We bought a Graco battery-powered swing, but because we didn't get it until my fdaughter was a few months old, she's perfectly happy without it when we have to spend a weekend away or something.

My baby likes the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders swing (not the take-along model). It swings side to side which he liked when he was smaller, and also front to back. It has many speed settings, music, and also something to look at while he swings. I think they have discontinued the Ocean Wonders product line and have introduced a new line called "Rainforest". It is essentially the same type of swing. My little guy is 4 months old and still loves it. I think the weight capacity is 25 lbs and the price is about $170 (Canadian). It may seem like alot of $$ to spend but trust me...it is well worth it.

Always think portable and easy to carry. I got everything that is portable, easy to carry, converts into this or that, then you get more use out of it. I have an exersaucer from Toy's R Us that is also a playgym, it folds too! it's great for when I visit my parents or visiting friends with other children. Always think multi use!!
Another thing, if you are having a baby shower put that on your registry. If not don't buy it ask a friend who doesn't use it anymore if you can borrow it. It's expensive. I borrowed my girlfriends and I just put a receiving blanket on the swing just to keep free from baby spit up. Then when you are done with it return it. Also register for a jolly jumper, either one will work the one that you can attach to the wall is not bad (space saver) or the one with the stand ( you need room for that one) and they are great to take with you when you visit friends/families too.

We had a huge stand-up battery operated swing with my first and she loved it. I can't remember the brand.
My 2 month old currently loves his Fisher Price Soothing Motions Glider. It cost us US$69.99. We've had it since he was 2 weeks old and we haven't had to change the batteries yet. It is also very compact. It's not portable in the way that you can fold it up and take it with you, but it has handles on it so you can move it from room to room in the house.

I've never seen one that plugs into the wall. I used a battery powered one and had a wind-up one. My son did not like the wind up, and MY battery powered one was great, but my sister-in-law's positively ate batteries (she would have to change the batteries every day or two, where I change my son's maybe once a month).

I love the travel baby swings. They're portable and easy to take with you places. They're smaller so they don't take up a lot of room. And, they are good for younger babies because they have more support than the larger, tall-standing ones.
This is the one that I've used for both of my daughters - http://www.babyage.com/products/1852jjp_graco_graco_travellite_infant_swing.htm. It plays nice music, the carry bar leans forward when in position to be used and has lights on it. It has two stuffed animals that hang down. And, it cuddles them in more than the bigger ones as well.
I love it! Both of my girls loved it!

My son practically lived in his swing by Fisher Price (battery operated). I didn't have a travel swing, but there were so many times I wish I did.

Ooh...when I just went to the bru website and saw this, which looks like the one I had. If they had this one, I probably would have gotten it. The only major difference is that my swing (the big one) swings front to back and side to side.

honestly i would buy the charge in kind. it will save you money in the long run. the battery opertated ones suck batterys so quickly. the chances that you will actually need and or take the portable swing with you is slim.
