HIgh i am a 17 year old student that has alot of thoughts that go through my mind but everytime i start to express the way i feel some adults are quick to shot me down and say that i dont know what i am talking about. Now there are soem adults that do listen to what youth say and understand our opinions. im not asking that adults agree with us i just want to know why they don't listen. if we are suppose to be the future don't you think that you should know how the future generation thinks. thanks.

Probably mostly pride, but maybe a lot of some of what a couple of these other answers say as well.
Keep on Thinking & expressing ! The world needs new & fresh ideas. There was a guy at the U.S. patent office quoted as saying that they should shut down the patent office because evrything has already been thought of... That was in the 1950's !! Some Adults are just Dumb

Hi there!

Well, it's sad to say, but most of us so-called adults have forgotten what it's like to be your age. I can remember 17, lol! Talk about an awkward age, isn't it? You're not a kid, but not quite an adult either. Jeesh!

To the adults who shoot you down, be respectful, it's about all you can do! If you start getting negative about it, they're going to think they're vindicated in ignoring you, i.e. acting like a baby again!

To the adults who don't shoot you down, chew their ears off, lol!

I was a youth group leader at our church and I liked listening to the ways you guys think nowadays. Can't say I agreed with all of it, but it was definitely interesting!

As to why some shoot you down, a lot of it comes from perspective. Believe it or not, age does give a different view of things and some things I guess you really can't understand until you've lived it, experienced it or whatever. Still doesn't make it right that you get shut up first!

Take care!

Most adults are tired. We work long hours. We have many bills. We tend to be impatient. We were once young too and know that you are going to become the future, but when you do your thoughts will change; just like ours did and our parents before us.
Actually, we don't think so much about being in charge as we do about surviving and managing all we must do. Just wait until you get here, you won't have time to notice you've even arrived!
You also won't have much time for all those deep thoughts, so enjoy them now. Be patient with us, we are just too busy to be whimsical.

I agree completely with you. I am 13 and always have expressed my opinion in a respectful and backed up answer, yet people try to make you feel inferior because of age. You should not back down and constantly back up your point with facts. They should want to know, but some adults like to feel overpowering. Don't let it get to you, and keep fighting for what you believe in.

We listen when you have a point. You need education and experience to be able to back up opinions.....young people lack both as compared to adults (most adults that is). Tis a fact of life!

We do. Well some of Us listen. The trouble is that We have already thought most of the same things, albeit in a slightly diferent way.
Don't let Us stop You from asking questions and and demanding to be heard. How do You think We got to have Our say?

We're afraid. We're also afraid we'll forget what we were going to say, so we interrupt. I am very sorry. But I believe that is true. Stick to your guns, kid! If you can, write a journal for yearself to read when you get old. Should be fascinating! Maybe your mother won't find it and throw it out like mine did.

Because MOST young people don't have enough life experience to make or have educated opinions. No offense!

10 years from now when you are 27, you will think that every 17 year old is full of crap.
