Sounds like it could be your water pump. If it's broken, it's not pumping the water through your cooling system.

You didn;t mention what kind of vehicle but here are a couple of things to check out I hope this helps you : first of all if it's anything like my chevy that one belt operates a bunch of different pullys and trying to get it on correctly can be a real headache here are some things to watch out for: is the waterpump & fan both turning? (if fan is electric it may turn off and on uexepectedly so be very carefull with hands and fingers) if the fan is electric and doesn't come on make sure wires are connected and temp senser are ok. The next thing is look for any coolant leaks if a waterpump is going out there will be a small trickle coming out a port hole on the water pump. These last two things are extreme and I hope have not happened to you. How hot did it get? It doesn't take very long to hurt an engine so look for any kind of steam coming out of the tail pipe. Next check the engine oil to see if it looks normal. I learnedthis one the hard way when I bought a used van.If you have a blown headgasket or cracked or warped head water will leak into the oil pan (it never uses any oil and the dipstick dipstick shows to full.Is the oil color a milky brown? beware) (The other place water or coolant will go is into one or more cylinders.Does it run rough? Is the motor missing? Is there white steam coming out of the tail pipe when its running? beware ) I hope for your sake it is niether of the last too cases. best of luck to you i hope this helps

If you fan wasn't damaged when the belt broke, and if it's been put on facing the right way (ignore this if you have an electric fan), then its probably the water pump. This could also explain why the belt broke in the first place - the extra force needed to spin it could have been more than the worn belt could handle.

I don't know what a serpentine belt is, but I'm wondering if your car has an electrostatic (?) fan? Maybe it doesn't turn on. If your radiator fan is indeed belt-driven, maybe the belt isn't tensioned enough and the belt slips. Usually you can hear this, but you could try tensioning the belt some. I assume there are adjustment screws for this and you used them in installing the belt.

With a cool engine, open the radiator and start. After it warms up, make sure you see water flowing through the radiator. If not, you either have an air bubble in the block or the water pump is bad.
Make sure the belt didn't damage the fan.

looking at the fact that the serp belt broke there's also another possibility other then thermostate, fans, water pump and proper installation of the belt. look for a possible broken wire that could have been caused by the broken belt. check the vehicle temp sensor as well.

Well I can't tell what year and make your car is. If you have already verified that the actual water temperature is not hot, then my best guess would be that your water temperature sensor is bad. It would also be a good idea to make sure that your engine cooling fan is working properly.

If the routing is wrong on the belt, then the water pump will not move any water.
