you can open up the game, and there is a battery in there, much like a watch battery, but larger, like cr07 or some such.
however, replacing that battery is counter productive, it usually costs more to replace the battery than the game is worth, and is quite difficult to do. i, myself, cannot do it, because i do not have a wielder's torch
you bought a bad game, and i would contact the seller, informing him that you're aware of that problem, and if there's anything he's willing to do.
the purpose of the battery is to save the save files, and the time of day

Well.. i don't believe so. something similar happened to my brother. He had pokemon yellow... got to the end of the game. Baby sister got mad at him and threw it in the sink, it bounced around a few times, he turned it on, no save. from there on, it never saved again...

there is no way to fix it i suspect the person played it then sold it when they broke to a person who didnt know it is broken
