I am trying to schedule a conference call with an outside vendor, my boss and me. I have never used the phone to do a conference call. I learn the steps from my boss and try it 3 times but can not set it up. So my boss comes over to my desk and sets it up. I was doing somethng wrong. My boss goes back to her phone and as soon as she gets on the line tell the vendor "finally we are on, she is from India, I had to go set it up". I immediately said dont be so insulting. She said I am joking I like Indians. The vendor was speechless, said nothing. We went on with the conference call. After the call, I tell her so I am from India and bring up the topic. She said she was joking. She respects Indian and thinks they are intelligent. You think this kind of comment is joking specially to a vendor. I have another coworker who keeps saying the Indian guy on American Idol can not sing. Indians cant sing. I laugh at that cause I feel it pertains to someone I dont know and also because it can be true

maybe she WAS joking and is just really bad with it. Let it go and see if it happen's again....If she continues to make racial comment's then file a complaint on her. No one should have to be uncomfortable at their place of work, good luck and I hope your boss get's a better sense of what humor is.

Everybody is capable of saying something stupid or out of line. And bias can be tempered.
So I think it's a good idea to allow everyone at least one mistake. If you do so and this person doesn't do that again and is pleasant to work with, you're much better off than if you let the issue cause hostility. If, on the other hand, she continues to make such comments, jump on her with both feet. If you decide to complain to your company, you'll be able to point out that the behavior has been repeated.
I hope it works out well for you.

Nothing. i dont understand why this is a big deal. You may be new to our country but i't s sometimes common to joke about races. I do with with people all the time and the joke right back. It's a friendly attempt to ease tention rather than cause tention. loosen up

This comment was absolutely inappropriate and demeaning to anyone who heard it. I would certainly file a written complaint to upper management about the comment. It is a racial slur regardless of how your boss intended it to be. She should be severely reprimanded if not demoted or terminated for this.

Well... you learned something very fast, how to play the race card.

Grow up and stop taking everything so personally.

It's a racial slur and no joking matter.
