you can send it off to a data recovery place and pay big money to get it back

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/141117 doesnt explain much but I would say that yes, they can be recovered.

I am unclear exactly what you did though...you say "i bought a HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE and tried to use it wiht my old hd".

What kind of enclosure, USB? If so, this would not show up as a secondary drive, but rather a removable drive. If windows booted before, I would say that your data is mostly intact. You just need to get a stable environment in which to copy. Maybe some of the bootable linux distros might give you access that windows doesnt.

sounds like the old drive is still being seen as a primary drive, did you reset the master slave jumper on the drive. if that is not the case, you need to have someone set you up so the drive is seen as a slave, and then you should be able to copy your data off, your applications will still have to be reloaded.

hook up the 160 gb sata to the motherboards sata connectors and not an external sata port
then see if you can copy to the new main drive
