I'm thinking about doing a semester exchange in Latvia and it would be great if you could tell me anything you know about the country. Also, any websites or travel guide books that you recommend would be great.

Latvia is one of the Baltic countries located East of Russia and surrounded by Baltic Sea. It makes it’s climate quite mild. But they have snow in winter. It could be compared to New England to some extend. It has a lot of history, cultural and sports events. It’s capital and cultural center is Riga. Here are some web references.

Here are some links to Latvia:

However, if you google them you would be able to find a lot more information. AAA should have some information on Latvia.
There is a lot to do and see in Riga and its surroundings, as well as in Latvia in general.

Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvija or Latvijas Republika, Livonian: Lețmō), is a country in Northern Europe. Latvia shares land borders with Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south – and both Russia and Belarus to the east. In the west, Latvia shares a maritime border with Sweden. The capital of Latvia is Riga (Latvian: RÄ«ga). Latvia has been a member state of the European Union since May 1, 2004.

You may discover interesting opportunities for business in Latvia, so you can stay longer than you firstly thought. If you want to open a company in this country and start doing business, you should know that you can do this by yourself or you can give the power of attorney to a Latvian lawyer or a specialist in company formation. I know that it's a former Soviet republic. If I'm not mistaken, it's near Lithuania, which is turn is near Poland. So when you're looking at a map of Europe, I recommend you look near Poland to find Latvia. (If I'm guessing wrong, you'll find out soon enough.)
