How do photovoltaics convert energy from the sun into electricity?

When struck by a photon, (light) an electron is released from the top layer of silicon to the bottom layer. It's a long and somewhat complicated process. The link below will describe the process in words and diagrams. I hope this helps.

into batteries like your car - if you have a big rig, you'll ned an inverter to convert to ac power
i don't know the process, but i know it won't work unless you are in a very mild-summer & cold winter climate.... hot summer would eat up all your power in a/c use!
