That sounds like fin rot. Fin rot is a bacterial infection that is readily treatable with several different medications common in pet stores. The treatments of choice are Furanace and Marycn 2 whichever you find available at your store. Treat as the box directs for 2 weeks.

Also be on the watch for fungus. Fungus often attacks weakened or injured fish and will appear to be a cottony growth on the injured areas. Treat fungus with any liquid medication containing Malachite Green. You may find this as a fungus cure or as Ick treatment. Either way the active ingredient is the same. Treat as directed until all traces of the fungus are gone.

Remember to remove the carbon from your filter during any treatment as it will remove the medication from the water.

Hope this helps

This sounds like fungal fin rot, commonly brought on by stress, fear, poor environmental conditions, injury, poor diet, etc. Finrot starts at the edge of the fins and destroys more and more tissue until it reaches the fin base. If it does reach the fin base, the fish will never be able to regenerate the lost tissue. At this point, the disease may attack the fish's body directly. Treat with Maracyn or Maracyn-2 according to directions. Remove the media from your filter as that will remove the medication from the water. Then focus on what the cause may have been as mentioned above and correct the problem(s).
