Since the top row of letters on a typewriter has all the vowels except for "a", along with the very common letters t, p and r, it's not surprising it has the best candidates to answer your question.
BUT, as nicely ironic as it would be, the answer is NOT "typewriter" (though if it DID qualify, OTHER 10-letter words tie it).
Probably the longest verifiable COMMON word is the 12- letter "teetertotter" though, as another answer already noted, it is commonly spelled with a hyphen.

As for other long ones:
At TEN letters, in addition to "typewriter", there is "perpetuity", "proprietor" and "repertoire".
Also, these rarer words have been suggested:
pepperroot, pepperwort, pewterwort, pirouetter, prerequire, pretorture, repetitory, tetterwort
And for LONGER ones-- if you can find them!-- try also:
11 letters: rupturewort (this one IS real!)
12 letters: proterotype, pituitotrope, uropyoureter

Ten-letter words that can be typed solely on the TOP ROW:
pepperroot, pepperwort, pewterwort, pirouetter, prerequire, pretorture, proprietor, repertoire, repetitory, tetterwort, and typewriter.
TEETERTOTTER might qualify as a 12-letter word, though it's really spelled TEETER-TOTTER. A person who rides a teetertotter would be a TEETERTOTTERER.
