The continent by definition es only one Amerrica. If Mexico is in the north, and centro and suth America belong to the same continent, why all this people are not Americans? We should be close countries like Erupeans countries..

Sometimes... we forget that fact that all of us are Americans who were born in North or South America and have citizenship of American countries
>>>We forget BECAUSE ---- US citizens call themselves Americans usually---<<<.

Why shouldn't they call themselves what they are. They are doing nothing wrong REALLY, even though the formal terms are US citizen and United States OF America for their country. They just have a powerful POP culture with movies, media etc... and some people have just assumed they are the only Americans.

WHAT I DISLIKE IS... when people call the US of A
>>>-- AMERICA-- <<<< It is like the US only is AMERICA but it is NOT TRUE. Many people don't understand this. Calling US citizens Americans is not a problem for me. JUST CALLING THE USA --America--

Everyone IS an American who was born in North or South America who has citizenship of American countries or even a native in remote areas. Even if they dont like it. ( Ha Ha )

A lot of people forget --or are not aware -- it is this way because Europeans came to dominate these continents becoming Americans themselves. It kind of ironic the name America comes from the name of an Italian explorer who extensively explored the North and South American continents. The "New World". Yeah only parts of these places became Colombia, and British Columbia. (A good thing ... Columbus was dodgy )

Anyway... both country names and continent names should be used as adjectives. The English (British) often call Canadians --Americans-- while they are in Canada because of the fact Canadians are, --you guessed it in North America--. The British and Africans and some Asians are naturally more regionally oriented peoples.

People from larger countries and even more so populous, powerful ones become --naturally, not so interested in geography-- They have no urgent need for the knowledge. The problem is ... People from these places sometimes take local matters into their own hands thinking it is the right thing to do forgetting the majority of people live outside their borders!

History it wouldn't be as interesting without human nature!

I live in Wales which is part of the United Kingdom although we have our own Welsh Assembly which is part of the Government. We can do things separately from England,Scotland and Northern Ireland up to a point. I consider myself to be both Welsh and British. Columbus was not British and why a person who played a major part in our history can be cast aside so nonchalantly amazes me. By the way, British people know the difference between Canadians and Americans and I would advise that you look up the Constitution of Canada to find out exactly where it stands as regards The United States of America - you may learn something! Since when did you have a monarchy in America? I always think of Americans as coming from North America and South Americans as coming from South America but never North Americans as coming from North America . We have many people in the UK who come from all over the world but have become British. The South Americans were in your continent as a whole long before the "Americans" were and so indeed were the native Americans. So why all the fuss?

First of all, it is 2 continents, not one. North America is a continent and South America is another continent. The residents of all are "Americans" but don't call themselves that. "Americans" typically refers to people from the US (not all of North America) because "America" is short for "United States of America". It just causes some confusion.

Because most people refer to themselves nationally using the name of their country. the United States of America happens to be the one with America in the title. Same reason Canada has Canadians, Brazil has Brazilians, Cuba has Cubans... While Europeans do consider themselves European, their first nationalism is their country too. So England has the English, Germany has Germans, the Czech Republic has Czechs, etc.

because people don't tend to refer to themselves by their continent, but by their country or ethnicity

you don't go around referring to yourself as a North American, do you?
