The European war basically grew out of Germany's resentment over the Versailles Treaty that ended World War I. Many historians consider these two wars to be two phases of the same war.
Germany was not totally defeated by the end of World War I, yet they lost territory and colonies, and they had to pay reparations. Their ability to raise an army was severly unlimited. Adolph Hitler played upon the nationalist feelings, blamed most of Germany's troubles on the Jews, and set out to reclaim "German" territory.
The League of Nations was very weak, so when Germany violated its orders, they did nothing. This helped bring about the war.
Neville Chamberlain's acquience when Germany took over the Rhineland (Checoslovakia, 1936) convinced Hitler he could invade Poland with impunity (1939).
Hitler violated his peace agreement with the Soviet Union in 1941, thinking his easy victories in western Europe (except for that nagging British invasion that never came off) would lead to easy victires in the east as well.
Another factor that led to the war was nationalism and facism in Italy, particularly the desire to establish colonies. Thus, Mussolini invaded Ethiopia (1935) and expanded the Italian colony in Libya (1937, invading in 1941). Again, the League of Nations did nothing.
Japan's growing economy and the need for both new markets and raw materials (read "colonies") brought about the invasion of Manchuria (1933). When the League of Nations did nothing, they attacked attacked China proper (1937).
The Japanese thought they could weaken the United States naval forces easily at Pearl Harbor, and that the U.S. would settle for peace rather than enter the war (1941).
Germany, Italy, and Japan were all bolstered by the Tripartate Pact of 1940.
Summary: World War II was started due to nationalism and facism in Germany and Italy, as well as militarism in Japan. All three countries wished to expand their empires. Other powers allowed them to pursue their imperialist courses until war was the only way to stop them.

Your kidding right? What caused World War II is like asking what is the source of energy. There are so many causes. Economic depression, coupled with social repression, intense nationalism, the realization of a finite planet, and much much more. I appreciate the other answers that are here but none of them are complete. Refine your question if you want a real answer. Something like what economic conditions existed at the start of WWII?

World war II was started by German aggression in which they ended up attacking Poland. And since Russia was Poland's ally they declared war on Germany, and then Germany's allies declared war on Russia. So Russia's allies declared war on Germany's allies, and in the long run everyone got involved because of their alliances. And it is funny because way back when, George Washington warned Americans about staying isolated from to many foreign alliances, and the countries that didn't avoid a whole bunch of foreign alliances were pulled in quickly but America stayed out of it until Japan attacked us at pearl harbor.

WWII was a result of the metternich plan being forgotten when germany was defeated in WWI therefore germany wanted revenge for mistreatmet by other nations and when Adolf Hitler told them of his idea, a world under german rule they were excited, he promised that germany would flourish. with the people holding on to his every word it didn't take long before he was in office, he then announced his plan for conquest. formed the nazis, and then in 1939 the nazis did a little trick, they destroyed polish border gaurd houses saying it was an attack by the polish and dressed up dead prisoners in polish uniforms sayin they were dead attackers, this made the germans angry so they declared war, and the rest, is history.

The Treaty of Versailles. Britain and France wanted to punish Germany for WWI by paying for the whole war. They did which caused Germany's economy to be in shambles. This allowed Hitler to seize power based on Germany's economic woes.
