"Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" is about an African American family, recently freed from slavery, trying to cope with racism. It's told through the eyes of fourth-grader Cassie Logan. It's an excellent book, and part of a series. Most of the books are told through Cassie's eyes, although there are a few that aren't, including "The Land" which is through the eyes of her grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather?) who is mixed, and looks white but is treated like an African-American. All the books I've read in the series are very good, although some of them are awfully short.
