I have a goal to see every movie that won best picture at the Oscars before I die. Are there any other classic or ground-breaking movies that didn't win that I need to see, too? (They can be from any time period)

I don't know which did or did not win Best Oscar but here are a list of my must see movies and a lot of them are on general must see movie lists.

Gone With the Wind (1939)
A Wizard of Oz (1939)
Citizen Kane (40s)
Casablanca (40s)
The African Queen
Zulu (60s)
All Quiet on the Western Front
Mary Poppins
A Sound of Music (60s)
Lawrence of Arabia (60s)
Sophie's Choice
God Father Series (I don't like the 3rd movie)
E.T
The original Star Wars trilogy
A Beautiful Life (Italian - I think that's the name, Roberto Benini won Best Actor)
Amelie (French)
Philadelphia
Forrest Gump
The Lord of the Rings trilogy

And then more popular ones rather than Critically acclaimed ones;
Pretty Woman, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, While you Were Sleeping, Titanic.......I'm sure there are others. always are. :o)

Not every Oscar winner became classic. I'd just guess that for every Oscar winner that was classic, there's probally 50 more classics that didn't win an Oscar. Just look around you and listen and learn about what movies people are talking about and what they're saying about them. This is a good place to start. If everyone says a movie is classic, then check it out. Don't worry if it won an Oscar or not. As for Oscar movies though, there's a network on cable (TNT, AMC or something) that every now and then will show the Top 100 Oscar Winners during a weekend long marathon. So you might wanna keep your eye out on that! :-) Have fun!

Boyz in the Hood was an intelligent story during a time when many of the movies with gang depictions were vehicles for a lot of gratuitous gore, some of which were of questionable value. You may recognize some of these actors: Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding, Ice Cube, Angela Bassett, Regina King. They have all gone on to make some pretty decent movies. I think this movie is from an important time in American culture, and stands out as a very good story that is well acted.

Hey Bo!

Roger Ebert, the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic, has a regular feature in his Chicago newspaper & web column called Classic Movies--his judgment is very good, and he knows and loves movies--on the site, you can call up just any review he's done on the Classics--He's also published two collections of his Classic movie reviews--100 movies in each book!
Try a Search on Roger Ebert - Classic Movies and you should be able to get info & a weblink!

I love movies too, old, new, all kinds so it is really hard to come up with a few names but G.I. Jane with Demi Moore was a more serious version of Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn, but I loved them both.

Overall...I'd vote for CASABLANCA.

Simply because it's one of the few films that combines action, romance, intrigue and a little humor. Of course...it also contains the academy award winning song: "AS TIME GOES BY!"
