First set up the board.
White moves first.
You can move two spaces with the pawns in the first move, only.
Here are the pieces:
Pawns - cone with a small ball on top. it can move forward one space only, but attacks diagnally: one square
Knights - the horse. move in L-shaped formations the end parts of the L determines their final position or their attack point.
Bishops - the one with a slit at the top. can move diagonally cross the board; space by space or directly across the board. If a bishop is on a black square, they follow only the black squares. Same goes for the ones on the light colored squares
Rook - the castle looking piece. can move one or more than one spaces at a time across or sideways
Queen - she's the one with the crown. she owns the board. can move in ALL directions one or more squares at a time.
King - the one with the cross on top. can move in all directions but one square at a time.

Techniques:
start out with pawns, then knights.
Move bishops only to attack or set up an attack
Never take out the queen unless you're ready for an attack. if you lose her, then you will have a high chance of losing.
Use rooks often.
NEVER move the king until he is in check. If you
move him, you may put him in line with an attack.

To win:
You have to put the king in 'check.' this means that you have the king trapped and he's got no place to go AND that no oother of the opponents' pieces can get you. Once you've got him trapped, say 'checkmate' and the game is over, you've won.
I heard somewhere that if you put the king in 3 checks you automatically win, but I don't kno where I heard that.

Have fun with it. Chess is a mental strategy game. Practice with it

to play chess... the object of the game is to get the king in check mate. there is 6 different kinds of pieces; 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, 1 queen, 1 king. the night moves in an L shape, 2 moves one way 1 move the other way. the rook can move in any direction except diagonal any amount of spaces. the bishops move diagonally, any amount of spaces. in the first move of each pawn, they can move 2 spaces, after that they can only move once, and can't go backwards. the queen is the best mover you have, it can move any direction any amount of spaces. the king moves any direction, but only 1 space at a time. back to the pawn, to capture a piece with the pawn, you have to move diagonal. if you have a line up where you can get the king, but it can move away from that line up, it is called check. if there is a way you could capture the king, and it can't get away, then it's called checkmate. if the only pieces on the board are kings then it's called stalemate.
special moves; one special move is that if the king is on the same line as a rook, you can switch them.
