My teacher is a douche bag. We have these fill in the blank quizes online to take for my oceanography class and the answers have to match exactly or they show up as wrong. I have already tried:

west, western, westerly, left, east, eastern, easterly, right, north, south, northern, southern, north west, south west and all of them show up as wrong.

The question is referring to Hadley cells, which have an upward direction at the Equator. They are related to tradewinds and the formation of tropical forests and subtropical deserts.

It's west to east, or
west-to-east
westerly
from the west
towards the east
or anything else you can think of that means from west to east.

That's a dumb quiz if it's programmed that way.
And your teacher is not a douchebag. You are for calling someone a bad name.

Edit: below answerer is right. Pick him for best answer. Dominant air movement != dominant wind direction.

Equatorial region gets maximum solar radiation and thus the surface area gets heated to the maximum and air rises in this area creating a low pressure belt here. But there is a weak pressure gradient in this equtorial low pressure belt.Hence this is a region of calm winds known as doldrums. As air is constantly rising in this region frequent rain are experienced resulting in equatorial forests.

It is a trick question. The winds at the equator are called doldrums. Because there is little or no wind.
