Actually some places will accept faxes, but not attachments on email due to possible viral infections.
So faxes won't really go away even though it really is rather old technology.

You can get you an all in 1 printer, that can scan, copy, and print for well under $100.
Recently I needed to send a money order to a bank, when I called they told me I could scan it on my pc then email it to them! I love technology.........
lol, dont worry dragon, I thought it read modem when I first looked too, but the question is, whats "modern"

modem - modulate and demodulate the modem converts analog signals into digital binary data ( since it's going over a a land line )
so there fore it must modulate ( encode from analog generate signals from a computer ) and then demodulate at the other end ( convet the analog data into a useable digital binary stream )
and people still fax left and right not everyone emails documents and contracts ect....
